Called the “Angelic Grappa Maker” by Luigi Veronelli, his grappas were judged rough, straightforward, strongly anchored to the peasant tradition, without concessions for the modernist softness. Romano Levi designed his last label on the evening of May 1, 2008.
Origin: private collection
Colour: straw yellow grappa
Glass: classical 70 cl bottle of the Levi Serafino distillery
Label: original one of a kind bottle. Rare king of grappa with 2003 printed front label, bearing a coat of arms with white cross on red background and two lions beside, a row of vines and the writing “Acquavite di vinaccia – Prodotta e imbottigliata dalla distilleria Levi Serafino – Neive (Alba) Gradi 48 cl 70 Lic CNx00052J”; on the back, small hand-made label on red paper, bearing a red heart, signature and date “Romano Levi 2003”.
Cap: the paper seal UTIF that wraps the cork vertically is intact and original.
Filling level: excellent.
Described by Luigi Veronelli as the ‘Grappaiolo Angelico’ (Angel of Grappa Makers).
His grappas have been described as unrefined, genuine, strongly tied to peasant traditions, completely devoid of all frills and pretension, with no softening around the edges to please the modern market.
His work as a distiller has been praised by many famous enthusiasts, such as the former German chancellor Helmut Kohl, Cesare Romiti, Marcello Mastroianni, Antonello Venditti, Andrea Bocelli, Roby Facchinetti, Bruno Lauzi, Tino Buazzelli, Nicola Arigliano.
Romano Levi made the last label on the evening of 1 May 2008.
